Introduction
But, why Mumbai yaar?
Mumbai is the third-largest startup hub in India. Most people are unaware that their favourite brands and apps like Dream11, BookMyShow, Zepto, Pepperfry, and more come from Mumbai. It’s also the city of Bollywood (the American Dream’s equivalent) where ideas manifest to life. If you’re lucky to have lived in Mumbai, a part of that is going to stay with you no matter where you go.
An obscure fact about this city is that it’s home to a large share of the country’s unicorns and soonicorns. These are companies that are valued at $100 Mn or above. Deputy CM of Maharastra, Devendra Fadvanis, explained why this was the case:
Mumbai’s reputation as a cosmopolitan and safe city goes a long way towards attracting talent. At the same time, this talent has the opportunity to take advantage of early and growth-stage startups and then move to late-stage startups for career growth. Unfortunately, the cost of living and rental costs are incredibly high.
Nonetheless, Mumbai is a great city to live in. It hosts a lot of cultural events and has plenty third spaces for exploration. It has still maintained its reputation as the ‘City of Dreams.’ So, if you’re planning a move to Mumbai or you’re already here, we hope this guide helps.

Neighbourhood breakdown for tech
Name | Type | Notes |
Colaba | Residential,Office | This is the place to be in. Retains Mumbai’s old architecture and contains a mix of residential + office spots. Also a great place to live in but the rental costs could be super high, unfortunately. |
Nariman Point | Office | Retains Mumbai’s old architecture, has the marine drive stretch, and contains a lot of office buildings. Dense with tech people. |
Malabar Hills (Walkeshwar) | Residential | Elite of the elite residential area - home to Antilla (Ambani residence), and numerous top Indian industrialists across majority business houses. |
Lower Parel/Worli | Residential,Office | If you’re interested in meeting your idols, a casual stroll around Lower Parel is great for that. This place consists of a lot of hangout spots — clubs, spas, malls, and more. It’s an expensive side of town to live in, though. Home of the Lal Baigh Raja - largest and most iconic of the Ganesh installments during the festival in August. |
Dadar | Residential,Office | Renowned for local train hub (intersection of Western, Central and Harbour line rail tracks) & out-station. Dominant in residential, the region is sprinkled with offices, known for its local food joints and iconic tourist spots like Shivaji Park, Chaitanya Bhoomi/Ambedkar Memorial. |
Bandra | Office,Residential | Quick context: Bandra also includes Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Lots of offices and startups around this place. Unfortunately, it’s also a very posh neighbourhood. It has the Bandstand Promenade nearby (good for a de-stress walk if you can reach by foot). |
Kurla, Chembur, Ghatkopar | Residential | These places listed are closer to BKC. It also extends to Sakinaka, an eastern suburb. These regions serve as a good living option with affordable housing and homely neighborhoods. |
Vile Parle, Santacruz | Residential | Serene place. It has a beach nearby. It’s residential and a good place for families given the area is well-developed and has all basic amenities covered. Lots of places around for food and things to do. |
Andheri | Office,Residential | Crowded. This neighbourhood has a high concentration of offices and buildings. Reasonable place to live in if you have to move to Mumbai (even if your office is in Colaba, Lower Parel, Bandra). |
Powai | Residential | A quieter and family-oriented (upscale suburban) neighbourhood. Not recommended for tech, though home to IIT Bombay campus. Sprinkled with few corporate office, the place is known for its top restaurants, bars and restobars. |
Goregaon | Residential,Office | Dense with offices (with more companies shifting base here) and tech people living here. The neighbourhoods are decently posh. The cost of living in Goregaon can, thus, get pretty high. |
Malad | Residential,Office | An obscure fact for you: Malad has the most number of popular vada pav spots. This part of town also has a high concentration of offices, buildings, and high rise apartments. |
Borivali | Residential | Not a lot of tech folks live here. There are also fewer startups located in this area. But, the locality is residential and a great place for families. |
Thane | Residential | While a district of its own, it houses many residential complexes offering affordable accomodation (but can get a fair bit expensive in Hirandani and similar gated communities). Also home to several factories and industrial areas. Dampner here being travel time to central parts of Mumbai. |
Navi Mumbai | Residential,Office | It’s an up and coming tech neighbourhood. A little far from Old Mumbai, but with the new Atal bridge, you can go to Old Mumbai in under 12 minutes. It’s also home to the eventual additional airport to Mumbai, though that maybe a good 3-6 years away. |
